Wrinkles appear on our face for two reasons: age and as a result of facial expressions. Wrinkles that have formed due to facial expressions are called dynamic lines. When we are young, our skin springs back to its original position. As we get older, dynamic lines remain and become static lines. Static lines are those that are visible when you aren’t making a facial expression. This happens because the elasticity of our skin decreases with age.

Wrinkle treatments relax specific muscles that cause dynamic lines. Once relaxed, you cannot contract the muscles and continue to make the undesirable facial expression. This way, the lines will—over time—smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.

No, wrinkle injections are generally not considered a painful procedure. When we administer the treatment, we use only very fine needles so that you can be sure that only a minimal level of discomfort is felt. After the treatment, you might notice some swelling or redness around the injection points that should disappear quickly.

You can expect to start noticing the initial effects of your treatment within two or three days following your wrinkle procedure. Maximum effect can take between one and three weeks to become properly established. You can expect the wrinkle injections to last between three and four months. For maximum effect, we generally recommend that five injections are administered at your initial appointment.

Wrinkle injections work by blocking the nerve impulses in the injected muscles. This prevents the targeted muscles from contracting when you make a facial expression. Although wrinkles don’t always disappear altogether, the treatment effectively softens lines and wrinkles, improving the overall appearance of the skin.

Occasionally, you may develop a small temporary bruise at some injection sites. A mild headache may also occur for 1 to 2 days. A transient eyelid droop may develop, but this is an uncommon event. Skin rashes, including rashes at the site of injection, are rare.

After our wrinkle treatment, the frown lines are relaxed. The skin around the treated area will look smooth and less wrinkled. After wrinkle treatment, you will still be able to smile, frown, and laugh as normal, just without as much wrinkling of the skin in treated areas.
