The history of cosmetic tattooing
Cosmetic tattooing goes back centuries in the Middle East. However, it’s only been in the last 30 to 40 years that it has reached the Western world like it has. Celebrities from Cher and Michael Jackson to Madonna and Whitney Houston have had cosmetic tattooing done.
What is Cosmetic Tattooing and what’s involved?
Cosmetic tattooing is a semi-permanent way to enhance your appearance. This is achieved through tattooing the appropriate pigment colour into the dermis layer of your skin. During this procedure, a topical anaesthetic will be applied to the area being treated.
By semi-permanent we mean that cosmetic tattooing can last from 2 years to as long as 7 years before there is a noticeable loss of colour. Fading occurs because of:
- Skin type
- Skin products used
- Natural skin exfoliation
- Exposure to sun
Frequently Asked Questions
At Ashbury Cosmetics, our in-house cosmetic tattooist only uses approved pigments and follows strict health and safety regulations.
A good candidate for cosmetic tattooing is someone who is looking for a waterproof, perspiration proof and time saving solution to cosmetics.
Healing will depend on what area you have had treated. Generally speaking healing takes around 4 to 6 days. Some swelling is possible as well as slight tenderness but these usually resolve after the initial 24 hours.
A topical anaesthetic is used to alleviate any discomfort you might feel during the treatment.
Typically, treatment lasts between 2 to 7 years (which is why it’s not supposed to be called permanent makeup).
