Why is tattoo ink permanent?

Tattoo inks are made mainly of heavy metal compounds. When a foreign material like tattoo ink is injected into the body, the body reacts in its own defence, and sends out white blood cells. How does the tattooing process work?

A tattoo is a way of permanently marking/staining the skin so that it is unable to be removed by shedding or rubbed off with water, soaps or chemicals. When a tattoo artist prepares the skin for the tattoo it is cleansed with a sterilising solution and then the artist will use an electronically powered tattoo ink machine which can puncture the skin between 50 and 3,000 times per minute. This puncture goes through the first layer of the skin called the epidermis and injects an insoluble bubble of ink into the dermis. The epidermis is a translucent layer of skin, that is why we are able to see the ink layer in the dermis layer of skin and this is also the reason why we are unable to easily remove the tattoo after the tattoo process. Once the tattoo is on your skin it is there for life (although it can age if exposed to UV sunlight) and it will be impossible to remove without surgical intervention.

Apparently, many new dads are getting their tattoos removed because they want to set an example for their kids.
