A recent study done by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons has found a significant increase in the number of cosmetic procedures done in countries such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia. There were 47,000 surgeries performed in 2011, a major increase for the two countries. The surgery that was most commonly requested was nose reshaping, seeing more women (and occasionally men) in these countries become a lot more concerned with appearance and beauty. ‘Why this rise in beauty concerns?’ you may ask, well, it is most likely the introduction of western culture and ideologies – including beauty and obtaining the perfect figure. This proves that self-confidence issues are universal and do not discriminate.
Due to Saudi’s recent infatuation with cosmetic surgery there has been a religious outcry. A senior Islamic authority has spoken out on the matter, deeming it may be acceptable to fix injuries incurred by accidents or birth deformities, however, it is not permissible to use cosmetic surgery for the sole reason of beauty as it goes against the ‘fatwa’ by altering ‘God’s creation’ and is considered a sin.
