Male Cosmetic Surgery On The Increase In Australia
Over the past 5 years, there has been a dramatic increase in male cosmetic surgery in Australia with men of all ages opting to surgically enhance their appearance and stave off the signs of ageing.
This trend is gradually catching up with the US and Europe, where males make up a large portion of client numbers. This trend is very likely to continue to rise across Australia following social acceptance of male cosmetic surgery.
In 2009, a quarter of American patients receiving Rhinoplasty (nose surgeries) were actually men. 26 per cent of eyelid surgeries, where the excess folds of skin on the eyelid are removed were also performed on American men.
We are now seeing this trend slowly but surely infiltrate Australian society— case in point; enter Shane Warne, Sam Newman and Paul Hogan. These high-profile Australian men are among a growing number of Australian males queuing up for cosmetic treatments such as dermal filler treatment and wrinkle relaxants to maintain their youthful looks. Other popular cosmetic treatments from men include gynecomastia (male breast reduction) and Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to enhance their image.
Here at Ashbury Cosmetic Surgery, located in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, we too have seen an increase in male clients looking to enhance their appearance, from body builders wanting a leaner appearance, to men wanting to reverse the signs of ageing.
Gynecomastia for a leaner chest….
For example, the development of male breasts can be both emasculating and a cause for ridicule and embarrassment in many men. For body-builders who are relatively lean and toned, presenting a very small amount of fat over the chest area, gynecomastia has been found to be satisfactory by simply excising the actual hypertrophic gland without having to remove any fat. However, in older patients as well as the average adolescent or middle-aged man, gynecomastia is often a mixture of breast tissue and fat, and the combination of gland excision with liposuction is most useful.
Surgery in breast reduction depends upon the nature of the enlargement with glandular enlargement needing circumareolar excision while fatty tissue in excess often needing liposuction. Preparation for the procedure generally involves the use of a mammogram and ultrasound to remove uncertainty over the potential presence of breast disease or tumour.
Surgery is usually conducted under local or general anaesthetic, with a period of two weeks rest before returning to work being taken. An additional four to five weeks rest may be needed before resuming normal activity.
