The warmer months are fast approaching, and if you have unsightly veins on your body, this is the perfect time to address the issue. Read on to find out more about the non-surgical treatments that are available for varicose and spider veins…
What are varicose veins, exactly?
Varicose veins occur when the veins become enlarged or overfilled with blood. They generally appear swollen and raised from the surface of the skin, and are typically a shade of blue, purple or red.
Unfortunately, varicose veins are a common condition and tend to affect women more than men. In fact, up to around 25 percent of adults suffer from varicose veins, most commonly on the lower legs. Varicose veins can, however, appear in any part of the body, including the face, thighs, ankles and feet, causing cosmetic concern.
Although varicose veins are often painless and do not cause any discomfort, they can lead to swelling, a heavy sensation, and even the development of ulcers.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins, also known as telangiectasia, refers to very small blood vessels, which cause visible lines on the skin. Spider veins often appear in clusters or take on a fine, web-like appearance.
Spider veins are a common concern in areas such as the lips, nose and cheeks, and those who develop the condition often seek treatment in order to enhance their overall appearance. Although usually not life-threatening, spider veins can cause embarrassment and dissatisfaction.
How are veins removed?
Fortunately, it is possible to have both varicose and spider veins removed with a range of effective treatments. The two most common treatments that we perform for the treatment of unsightly veins are sclerotherapy and laser treatment.
Sclerotherapy is a technique in which a specially formulated liquid is injected into the area of concern, causing the visible veins to shrink. Over time, the treatment causes the veins to collapse and become reabsorbed by the body. The treatment is often a great option for individuals who suffer from varicose or spider veins that are fairly large and cover a considerable area of skin.
At Ashbury Cosmetics, we also offer laser treatment, which is an effective means for getting rid of both varicose and spider veins. Laser treatment works by targeting specific areas of the body with pulsing beams of light. The laser causes the visible veins to collapse, leading to reabsorption of the veins, and eventually a decrease in their visibility. Laser treatment is often recommended for individuals who have smaller veins that they would like to resolve.
Besides laser treatment and sclerotherapy, we also offer a vein treatment known as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT). The treatment usually takes around an hour to complete and involves the insertion of a very small catheter or laser fibre into the vein. Radiofrequency or laser energy is delivered into the vein, causing it to shrink and subsequently seal shut.
