Body shape, weight loss and stubborn fat are among the most common concerns for cosmetic surgery patients.
For many years liposuction has been the answer to all these concerns; physically removing fat from the body. This popular fat-reduction procedure is designed to contour the body shape through invasive surgery with minimal scarring.
Today, the cosmetic industry has evolved to offer a greater range of procedures to patients narrowing down on personal preferences. While some patients are looking for a less invasive treatment to fit into their busy schedules, others still prefer the more dramatic results of traditional liposuction.
What is liposuction?
What does liposuction involve?
During the procedure an incision is made in the area being treated and a cannula is inserted to suck out fat, which can reduce the size of the fat deposit. Your surgeon is able to remove fat from the body in such a way that helps shape the body while manually causing fat loss. Although the results of liposuction can be permanent the longevity of your results depends on your lifestyle habits and maintenance of your new leaner body through diet and exercise.
There are multiple variants to liposuction and even laser liposuction. At Ashbury Cosmetic, we offer slim-lipo. Slim-lipo is an advancement on liposuction, which utilises heat as well as suctioning to streamline the process of fat removal. This technique allows your surgeon to remove fat in a process that is less traumatic to the body and allows for a minimally invasive procedure.
What is the difference between laser liposuction and traditional liposuction?
Traditional liposuction relies on the force of the surgery to breakup the fat and remove it through a cannula. During surgery a cannula is inserted into the treatment site and fat is torn and broken down through sheer force before being sanctioned and removed from the body.
During laser liposuction, laser energy is set to interact with fat cells and the surrounding tissue is used to liquefy fat. The fat is then released from tissue where it can be sandwiched and trapped. The liquefied fat is easier to suction out of the body and so requires no force. A micro cannula is then used to extract it and remove it from the body. The lasers interaction with the tissue and the fat effectively reduces the size and weight of the area (by removing the fat) while also offering the benefit of skin tightening.
Recovery: what to expect?
The difference in the recovery time of these two liposuction procedures is a direct result of how the procedures are performed. While traditional liposuction is more aggressive and performed under general anaesthetic, laser liposuction can be performed under local anaesthetic targeting only the treatment area. This causes minimal damage and disturbance to surrounding tissue while suctioning the dissolved fat with a smaller cannula.
While liposuction patients should expect a recovery time of approximately two weeks, laser liposuction patients can recover in only a couple of days. Some patients report recovery within the course of the same day.
