Varicose Veins Are Not Just A Cosmetic Problem
While varicose veins are an unsightly problem they can lead to more serious issues.
Varicose veins may start off as a benign aesthetic problem—unsightly veins on the legs or face. However, if not treated varicose veins can lead to host of other, more severe problems such as:
- Venous leg ulcers: these are very painful and difficult to heal
- Deep vein thrombosis: this causes serious medical problems. Ways of detecting deep vein thrombosis is when there is a painful pulling sensation in the calf of the lower leg.
At Ashbury Cosmetic Surgery we have advanced ways of treating varicose veins…
With advanced technology at Ashbury Cosmetic Surgery in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast we have a number of treatments that effectively treat varicose veins. And while not everyone will end up with varicose veins, we thought we’d provide a list of some of the factors that may put you at risk of developing varicose veins:
- Age
- Being female; statistically speaking women are more likely to develop varicose veins—especially women over fifty
- Being overweight
- One or more pregnancies
- Not exercising
- Smoking
Getting treatment…
As technology progresses, we now have access to new and innovate methods of dealing with varicose veins. The two most frequently used treatment methods are laser treatment and Sclerotherapy. Both treatments effectively remove varicose veins and are basically painless. Neither of these treatments require you to be hospitalised or have painful vein stripping surgery.
1) Sclerotherapy
This technique involves injecting a liquid which makes the visible veins shrink. Eventually, this treatment will cause the vein to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body.
If you have large varicose veins this treatment is recommended for you, and it is also the most cost effective way of removing varicose veins.
2) Laser Treatments
There are two kinds of laser treatment; one produces the same results (the vein collapsing and being reabsorbed by the body) but with a laser instead of an injection. The laser also has the benefit of being able to target specific areas using pulsing beams of light.
The second laser treatment is known as ELVT or Endo Venous Laser Therapy; this form of treatment only takes an hour. ELVT involves inserting a small catheter or laser fibre directly into the affected vein. The ELVT treatment shrinks and seals the varicose vein shut.
