Many men suffer from excessive breast tissue, with over 10% of the male Australian population suffering from gynecomastia (commonly referred to as ‘man boobs’). Various factors can contribute to the development of male breasts, and these can include:
- Hormonal changes
- Certain drugs and medications
Although it is possible to develop gynecomastia at any stage of life, it is most prevalent during adolescence and middle age. If you are concerned about your man boobs at Ashbury Cosmetics in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast we offer breast reduction surgery designed specifically for men.
This surgical procedure involves excision or liposuction techniques to reduce the breast size. For body-builders who are relatively lean and toned, presenting a very small amount of fat over the chest area, treatment has been found to be satisfactory by simply excising the actual hypertrophic gland without having to remove any fat.
However, sometimes in older patients as well as the average adolescent or middle-aged man, gynecomastia is often a mixture of breast tissue and fat, and the combination of gland excision with liposuction is most useful.
Preparing for the procedure
To prepare for this procedure you will need to have a mammogram and ultrasound to remove uncertainty of potential presence of breast disease or tumour.
Surgery is usually conducted under local or general anaesthetic, with a period of two weeks rest before returning to work. An additional four to five weeks rest may be needed before resuming normal activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
This depends on the procedure you have. If you only undergo a liposuction treatment you may be able to resume work after a weekend of rest. If you have undergone more intensive surgery it will generally take a week or so, depending on your body’s ability to heal.
If you gain a significant amount of weight you are like to experience a reoccurrence in the male breast forming. Some medications can also induce the abnormal growth of the breasts.
